Perjalanan mencari ilmu dalam fragmen rinci dari hal pembelajaran ke persahabatan dan keluarga, ia melarik antusias, impian dan angan-angan dalam mantera 'man jadda wajada'-- siapa yang bersungguh-sungguh, akan berhasil. Hal qanun yang awalnya seakan menyesakkan tapi mengajar disiplin membuka lembah perjalanan ilmu buat Alif dan angkatan sahibul menara. Ceriteranya enak dan fokus narasinya kukuh dan berlegar seiring personaliti setiap watak utamanya-- Alif, Raja, Baso, Atang, Said dan Dulmajid.\n\nPenulis bagus menghidup watak-watak utama dan naratif novel ini seakan aku menghadapi sendiri situasi harian dan bergabung belajar. Ada beberapa hal yang aku gemar-- tentang hal sepakbola dan pidato, acara menonton Piala Thomas, Raja dan Baso yang bersepakat menyusun kamus Inggeris-Arab-Indonesia khusus buat pelajar Pondok Madani, perihal adat minangkabau dan pepatah-pepatah lama, tentang hal-hal filosofi, sejarah Islam dan ceritera para ilmuwan yang menjadi idola para sahibul menara, sisipan istilah arab dalam plot juga perihal guru-guru yang tegas namun baik hati.\n\nWatak kegemaran aku selain Alif adalah Said. Entah kenapa terkagum sendiri dengan personaliti Said-- baik hati dan merendah diri. Juga Baso yang bijaksana dalam hafalan Quran, aku terkilan sendiri akhirnya dia terpaksa tewas tapi alasannya menyedihkan namun aku kagum semangat Baso tetap tinggi, syukur dia menemu apa yang dimahu akhirnya. \n\nNovel yang sangat inspiratif juga mengajar akan kekuatan ikhlas dan nilai moral yang bagus. Novel yang buat aku mengelamun terkenang zaman sekolah, sahabat lama dan cita-cita yang diputus harap *sigh*.
