Synopsis

This collection presents some of the earliest and most comprehensive English translations of Navajo oral traditions. Originally published in 1897, it features an extensive Origin Legend and two other tales, offering rich details on Navajo culture, rituals, and ceremonies. The edition preserves the original introduction, notes, prayer translations, and musical notations by Washington Matthews, an army major and surgeon who was a pioneering recorder of Navajo culture.
