Synopsis

A cross-channel steamer discovers a yacht adrift, seemingly abandoned, in the English Channel. A boarding party finds a gruesome scene: two dead men, one with a bullet wound, and no living soul aboard. When local authorities are baffled by the impossible crime, they turn to the brilliant Inspector French. He must piece together the perplexing clues to solve this chilling maritime mystery.

Freeman Wills Crofts was born in Dublin, the son of a deceased Army Medical Service surgeon-lieutenant. His mother re-married Jonathan Harding, the Vicar of Gilford, and Crofts spent his childhood in the Gilford vicarage. He attended Methodist College and Campbell College in Belfast.
