Synopsis

Albert Campion, a private detective and former Scotland Yard inspector, is offered a government post he turns down in favor of investigating two deaths at a boarding house. The case draws him into the underworld of Apron Street, where undertakers like Mr. Bowles quietly dispose of bodies for criminals — until their business becomes entangled with a plot to eliminate the Palinode family and seize their shares in a local bank.
