The Hunter is the third Wyatt Hunt novel, published in 2012.
Hunt was raised by adoptive parents he loved, and had never had much interest in tracing the family he came from. That changes with a single text message from an unknown number, asking how his mother died. He had always understood it was natural causes. It was not.
What follows takes him back through a killing nobody solved, into Child Protective Services records, and toward a birth father who was tried twice for the murder and convicted neither time. A drug-addicted, intensely religious woman named Evie sits somewhere near the centre of it.
The texter keeps pushing him forward and refuses to say who they are, and the chase runs out of San Francisco and eventually out of the country. It is a more personal book than the first two Hunt novels, and the threat sharpens considerably as he gets closer.
Published in German as Mordverdacht.
