Synopsis

In Minneapolis, reclusive software designer Grace MacBride and her "oddball crew" at Monkeewrench have built a video game, Serial Killer Detective, in which the killer is always caught and the good guys always win. Then someone starts recreating the game's murders in real life, and homicide detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth find themselves racing a killer who is always one step ahead. Meanwhile, in the small Catholic community of Calumet, Wisconsin, the shooting deaths of a reclusive elderly couple draws Sheriff Michael Halloran into a seemingly separate case that turns out to be anything but. As the two investigations converge, they expose a violent secret from Grace MacBride's own past.
