Misión en París is the eighth novel in Arturo Pérez-Reverte's Las aventuras del capitán Alatriste, published by Alfaguara in 2025 after a fourteen-year gap since El puente de los Asesinos. It returns to Íñigo Balboa as narrator — older now, and riding as one of the Spanish king's royal couriers — waiting in Paris for the arrival of Captain Alatriste, the poet Francisco de Quevedo and the taciturn Aragonese soldier Sebastián Copons, roughly a year after the events in Venice.
The France they enter is at war with itself: Cardinal Richelieu has laid siege to the Huguenot stronghold of La Rochelle, and English forces are backing the defenders. Through Quevedo's mediation, Alatriste and his companions are handed a secret commission from the Count-Duke of Olivares, an operation whose scale could redirect the course of European history and whose failure would cost them everything. Richelieu and Louis XIII appear alongside the Marquis Ambrosio Spínola and Angélica de Alquézar, and Pérez-Reverte allows himself one long-promised indulgence: four men unmistakably drawn from Alexandre Dumas — Athos, Porthos, Aramis and d'Artagnan — cross the Spaniards' path, and Athos crosses swords with Alatriste.
Critics received it as a return to form and a swashbuckler in the old key: duels, betrayals, court intrigue and state conspiracy, carried on the wry, disenchanted voice the series is known for, with its reflections on loyalty, courage and the corruption of the empires that spend men like coin. The Alfaguara edition runs 360 pages and is illustrated by Joan Mundet, with drawings opening and closing each chapter and period pastiche verse at the end.
