Au fil du temps, elle a pris confiance en elle, a lu des tas de livres, s’est liée à des gens intéressants, puis elle a perdu des amis, des amours, et la foi aussi. J’ai été particulièrement sensible à cet abandon de foi, une apostasie qu’elle affirme et réaffirme tout en admettant que la religion marquait encore sa vision du monde et que son système de valeurs restait profondément chrétien. Au fond, je reste convaincue que les valeurs qu’on nous inculque dès notre plus jeune âge ne nous quittent jamais tout à fait… Son exigence envers elle-même, sa gaucherie et sa froideur apparente m’ont touchée : je me suis reconnue dans cette apparence de marbre qui souvent cache beaucoup de tendresse et de douceur. « moi je souriais mal, je ne savais pas faire du charme, de l'esprit ni même des concessions ». J'ai vécu son chagrin d'amour comme si c’était le mien, j’ai ressenti ses doutes, ses malaises, ses extases comme si c’était moi qui parlais.
