Synopsis

Art Spiegelman's Maus I: A Survivor's Tale relates his father Vladek's account of surviving the Holocaust as a Polish Jew, drawn as an allegory in which Jews appear as mice and Nazis as cats. Interwoven with Vladek's wartime story in Poland is the present-day narrative of Art's difficult relationship with his aging, exacting father, as the two work through the process of remembering. First serialized through the 1980s and collected in this volume in 1986, the book traces Vladek's early life, his marriage to Anja, and the family's descent into the Nazi occupation, ending as Vladek and Anja are sent to Auschwitz.
