Synopsis

On her deathbed, a young woman named Mathilda recounts the story of her life — a tale marked by isolation, an obsessive father's confession of incestuous love for her, and his subsequent suicide. Her narration is addressed to Woodville, a gifted poet with whom she shared a troubled relationship, as she attempts to explain why she withdrew from him into silence before dying.
