Synopsis

Earth faces an environmental catastrophe, pushing humanity to look to Mars for survival. To colonize the Red Planet, a man must be transformed to withstand its harsh environment. Roger Torraway, an unlikely candidate, undergoes radical surgeries that change him physically and mentally, making him less human with each step. He must succeed, as the fate of humanity rests on his increasingly alien shoulders.

Frederik Pohl, Jr. was born in Brooklyn, New York. His father held a number of jobs, and his family moved many times in his childhood before settling in Brooklyn when he was about seven. He attended Brooklyn Tech high school, but dropped out and took a job to help support his family. As a teen, he founded the New York science fiction writer's group The Futurians.
