Synopsis

Set in the world of Raybearer, this standalone novel follows Small Sade, a young woman looking for work as a maid in the city of Oluwan, employers who won't blink at her unusual appearance and bad luck preferred. Before she can be hired anywhere, she accidentally binds herself to the Crocodile, a powerful, feared god rumored to devour pretty girls who cross him.

Rather than running, Sade reveals a secret of her own: she's a Curse Eater, able to alter people's fates simply by cleaning their houses. The Crocodile warns her their destinies are now entwined, but Sade slips away to take up a new post as the resident Curse Eater of a fashionable inn, trying to outrun both him and her own complicated past.

The revolutionary ambitions the Crocodile is quietly nursing, and the secrets Sade is still hiding, eventually pull the two back together, in a romance that treats power, consent, and found family with unusual care.
