Synopsis

In the grey, regimented Poland of the early 1960s, a precociously intellectual high-school boy chafes against the dull conformity of Soviet-era schooling, certain that the great age of art and adventure has passed him by. Then a new headmistress arrives to teach his French class: an elegant, glacially beautiful woman of thirty-two whose strict intelligence and worldly poise transfix him. Consumed by infatuation, he resolves to learn everything he can about her, conducting an elaborate, largely bookish investigation into her past that draws him through the Spanish Civil War, French literature, music, theatre and the buried history of his own country. His pursuit is comic and self-deluding, yet each step of detective work and reading deepens him, turning a schoolboy crush into an unexpected education of taste, longing and political awareness. The object of his obsession remains tantalisingly out of reach, but the chase becomes his first true awakening as an artist and as an adult. Witty, erudite and steeped in nostalgia for a vanished youth, the novel is at once a coming-of-age story, a love letter to high culture, and a quietly subversive portrait of life under a stifling regime that nonetheless flickered with warmth and beauty.
