This is gonna be a long review, because I had high expectations, and was very excited to read this.
It started strong, and the "build a spite house" concept felt very original to me, specially when the author explained that it's a real thing, this houses actually exists. However it was executed in a way that I didn't quite like.
The things that I liked:
The chapters are short, so it's a very easy, fast read. Loved the secondary characters, dogs included, and I was really enjoying the couple's interactions at first. Like I said, I liked the concept and since I'm a graphic designer I was very interested in the creative environment. The way the author approached the disability was also a good strike for me.
The things that I didn't like:
I felt like I needed more emotion from Dani at the beginning (and maybe throughout the hole book) I didn't feel enough anger from her to justified spending any amount of money and time on a house just to piss off your ex. The spite is nowhere to be found, even when it's supposed to be an enemy-to-lovers trope, it felt very insta-love. From the title I was expecting more tension between the main characters.
After the first half of the book, I started to feel annoyed at Dani and Wyatt, too much miscommunication for my liking, one kept secrets and did not let go of the idea of revenge, and the other suddenly closed off to any interaction as soon as a problem appeared.
Could have been a 3.5 stars review but THE ENDING was a NO for me.
Spoiler
I understand you may want your ex to have a happy ending for all the time and happy memories you spent together, but he burned the house down and Dani could have been seriously injured. He committed a crime. How is he not in jail? How did she let him get away with ARSON? He could do it again or hurt more people, but just because SHE THINKS he is not a bad person he got away with it. Just no.
Like I said, it was an original concept, It had a lot of potential but it ended up feeling a bit flat for me.
