Lost River
A holiday weekend in a picturesque village is cut short by a drowning. Detective Ben Cooper is a helpless witness to it, and the death stays with him. He is soon drawn into the tangled lives of the victim's family.
As Cooper gets to know them, he begins to suspect that one member of the family is hiding a secret, and that the rest are desperate to keep it buried. What looks like a single tragedy becomes a question about who is protecting whom.
Detective Fry follows a separate line. She travels back to the place she comes from and is pulled into an investigation of her own. The help she needs can come from only one person, and that person is Cooper.
He is back in Derbyshire, where his suspicions lead him to a shocking discovery on the banks of another river in the Peak District.
This is a police thriller with an atmospheric setting, told through two detectives working separate cases that draw toward each other. The mood is brooding and watchful, with the pace driven by family secrets and slowly building suspicion.
