Livesuit

Kirin Foss was an EMT. Now he is inside a livesuit: semibiological armour that enhances what a body can do, keeps it alive where nothing should survive, and carries him to a war fought across distances so vast that faster-than-light travel costs him decades of everyone else's lives.

Told in two interleaved timelines — the mission that costs Kirin a foot, and the enlistment that put him in the suit — this Captive's War novella sits alongside The Mercy of Gods rather than continuing it. What Kirin gradually works out about the suit, about his fellow soldier Piotr, and about the eight-year tour he was promised, is the point of the book.
