Synopsis

A cryptic text message pulls one family's hidden fractures into the open. When Quinn Cruz hears from her older sister Nora after nearly a year of silence, the warning that she has something to give her seems like more of Nora's usual drama, until a frightened Nora appears at the lake near Quinn's home with a small, silent, wide-eyed girl in tow. Just as quickly Nora vanishes again, leaving Quinn the reluctant guardian of a child known only as Lucy and a tangle of questions she cannot answer. As Quinn tries to honour her sister's desperate request, it becomes clear that Nora has stumbled into something perilous, and the danger reaches toward their whole family, including their imperious mother Liz, whose polished suburban world depends on appearances. Told through the alternating perspectives of Liz, Quinn, Nora, and Nora's troubled friend Tiffany, the story peels back layers of resentment, secrecy, and fierce love between mothers, daughters, and sisters. Part suspense novel and part family drama, it builds steadily toward the revelation of who Lucy is and how far the women will go to protect one another.
