Synopsis

Aphra Marsh has Deep One ancestry from Innsmouth, and she paid for it: after the 1928 government raid on her hometown that killed her father, she spent seventeen years imprisoned in a concentration camp in Oklahoma, where her mother disappeared. Now living in San Francisco with the Japanese-American family she met in the camp, Aphra works at a used bookstore, where an FBI agent named Ron Spector finds her. He wants her help investigating a group of Aeonists, worshippers of Cthulhu and the Great Old Ones led by a wealthy San Franciscan named Oswin Wilder. Wilder's cult has no real magic, Aphra soon realizes, but it poses a real danger to the followers he's luring with a false, deadly promise of oceanic immortality. Ruthanna Emrys opens her Innsmouth Legacy series by reworking Lovecraft's "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" from the other side, as a story about internment, survival, and stolen inheritance.
