Synopsis

In 1957, Lee Friedlander was granted unprecedented access to photograph the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom in Washington, D.C., a pivotal event in the Civil Rights Movement. This collection presents 58 previously unpublished photographs, capturing iconic leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., Mahalia Jackson, and Harry Belafonte, alongside the 25,000-strong audience. Friedlander's early work documents a crucial moment when voting rights became a central focus in the fight for equality. The book also includes a facsimile of MLK's 'Give Us the Ballot' speech and other historical ephemera.
