Synopsis

After a sudden stroke leaves him with 'locked-in syndrome,' Jean-Dominique Bauby, editor-in-chief of Elle magazine, finds himself almost entirely paralyzed, able to communicate only by blinking one eyelid. This is his remarkable true story, dictated letter by painstaking letter, of how he wrote his autobiography from within his own body. It is a testament to the resilience of the human mind and spirit.

About the author

J
Jean-Dominique Bauby

Jean-Dominique Bauby was the editor of French Elle before a massive stroke left him with locked-in syndrome. He wrote his memoir, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, by blinking his left eye to dictate the text one letter at a time. His work is a direct account of his internal life and the experience of physical paralysis.
