Synopsis

Set four centuries before "Les Mains sales," this play introduces Goetz, a man torn between his noble and peasant heritage, alienated from both sides of society. Initially an "anarchist of evil," Goetz finds that his destructive actions inadvertently benefit the very powers he opposes. When he attempts to pursue absolute good, his efforts similarly lead to widespread conflict and human suffering. The play explores man's fraught relationship with God and the absolute, questioning the impact of individual choices on a larger scale.
