Synopsis

Henri Troppmann, a wandering and tormented narrator, plunges into a life of absolute excess and self-destruction. As Europe teeters on the brink of war in the 1930s, he navigates a world of debauchery with three symbolic women: Lazare, a Jewish Marxist; Dirty, an alcoholic; and Xénie, a stand-in for his wife. This intense, personal account foreshadows the rising tide of violence threatening the continent.
