Maya Rodale has one of the best voices in Historical Romance and this book (the first of hers I've read) made me fall in love with her style. This book is everything that I find great about this genre! The main heroine is relatable and very funny but doesn't overshadow the greatness of the supporting players i.e. the other Cavendish siblings.
The hero, Darcy, has the greatest transformation and shows himself to be a deep and richly thought-out character instead of the usual romantic hero trope. The base story line of bringing the American Cavendish family to England so that oldest brother James can take his place as Duke of Durham works in the story's favor as the dialogue in the novel is a bit more relaxed and modern than in a lot of other HRs. However, it's really the family bond of the Cavendishes that provides a lot of the novel's heart and most humorous moments. Bridget (the Heroine), along with sisters Amelia (the Wild Child) and Claire (the Bluestocking), provide a glimpse into a sisterly bond strong enough to weather the trials and complications of a London season. It's this central relationship, along with James, and by extension, Josephine, the Dowager Duchess of Durham, that really draws you in and keeps you smiling and giggling though this novel. I cannot wait to read the rest of the series!!
