Synopsis

Pierre Clastres challenges conventional definitions of the state, arguing that economic expropriation and political coercion are incompatible with tribal societies, which represent the majority of human history. He presents examples of South American Indian groups that thrived without hierarchical leadership, demonstrating that societies can exist without oppressors and coercive state structures. This work offers a radical critique of Western state power by re-evaluating the nature of tribal societies.
