Synopsis

Two and a half years have passed since Thorn disappeared the moment he became a mirror-visitor, and Ophelia has spent them alone on her home ark of Anima, turning over what she read in the Book of Farouk. When the clues point her toward Babel, a cosmopolitan ark famous for its archives, its automata, and its official policy of non-violence, she travels there under a false identity to search for him.

Enrolled in one of Babel's family households to gain access to its restricted archives, Ophelia is drawn into investigating the suspicious death of a Memorialist, a case the ark's authorities would rather leave closed. As she gets closer to the truth, she finds that Babel's serene surface hides old grievances and a fear of being replaced that could tear the ark apart, and that the answers she is chasing lead directly back to Thorn.
