Synopsis

Set in the old Cairo neighborhood of Khan al-Khalili during the Second World War, as Axis bombs threaten the city, this early novel by Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz follows the Akif family, who flee their home for the supposed safety of the ancient, tradition-bound quarter.

At its center is Ahmad Akif, a proud, self-educated civil servant in his forties, stalled in his career and his life, who allows himself to hope for love and renewal through a young neighbor — until his charismatic younger brother returns and everything Ahmad has quietly wished for is thrown into doubt.

A tender, ironic portrait of a man and a family caught between tradition and modernity, faith and disillusionment, Khan al-Khalili is a vivid evocation of wartime Cairo and of the small, aching disappointments that shape an ordinary life.
