Synopsis
She has built a family and a life on the other side of a childhood she has never described to anyone, including her husband. That was the arrangement she made with herself, and it has held.
Then her six-year-old daughter starts behaving in ways that are familiar in a manner the mother cannot say out loud. The girl has a new imaginary friend, and the things the friend apparently tells her are details from the mother's own childhood, specific ones, that she has never spoken to a living person.
Minka Kent keeps the explanation open for a long stretch, and the reader is left to weigh a supernatural reading against the far more disturbing possibility that somebody real is feeding a six-year-old this material. First in the Dangerous Strangers series.
