Ignite My Heart marks the first book in Sheila Kell’s new series. It delivers a fiery blend of suspense, danger, and romance. Prepare for an intense ride as Maya Alvarez and Liam Carter race against time to stop a serial arsonist who is hellbent on revenge.
Maya Alvarez, an investigative reporter, has been following a lead involving a warehouse fire. A fire that bears the same hallmarks as the blaze that nearly destroyed her career three years earlier. When the Ghost, the perpetrator behind that incident, begins sending her threatening text messages from a number she never expected to be active, it becomes clear that she has once again landed in his crosshairs. Rather than backing down, Maya becomes even more determined to uncover the truth. Now a target of the Ghost's obsession, Maya teams up with firefighter Liam Carter to stop him before they both become victims of his twisted quest for revenge
Maya and Liam worked well together. Maya's bold, determined nature complemented Liam's protective instincts, creating a partnership that felt balanced and believable. While their romance unfolded at a slow-burn pace, the chemistry between them steadily intensified until it blazed as fiercely as the fires the Ghost left in his wake.
One aspect of the story I particularly enjoyed was getting the Ghost's perspective. Stepping inside his mind added another layer of suspense as readers witnessed firsthand how calculated and manipulative he was. He always seemed to be one step ahead. He knows every move Maya and Liam would make while they remained unaware of who they were truly up against. His chapters heightened the tension and kept me eager to discover his identity.
The writing style was different from what I have come to expect from Sheila Kell. It leaned more toward poetic prose, which took some getting used to and ultimately wasn't entirely my cup of tea. However, what kept me invested was the mystery surrounding the Ghost. I needed to know who he was, how he stayed ahead of everyone, and whether Maya and Liam would eventually outsmart him.
Overall, Ignite My Heart is a strong start to the series. The suspense kept me engaged, the villain was compelling, and the romance added just the right amount of heat. While the writing style didn't fully work for me, the mystery and tension more than made up for it.
