Synopsis

In the Sicilian fishing village of Aci Trezza, the Malavoglia family — whose name ironically means 'the lazy ones' — is slowly dismantled by a series of personal and economic misfortunes. Told through Verga's stark verismo style, each chapter centers on a different member's crisis: debt from a failed business venture, loss at sea, death in war, and the slow erosion of hope against an unforgiving landscape. The novel builds toward an inevitable tragic conclusion as the family's ties to one another fray under mounting pressure.
