Synopsis

In an alternate 1883, the United States and the Confederate States are locked in a brutal Second Civil War. Twenty years after the South's victory, the conflict escalates with foreign intervention from England and France. This new war rages across a lawless frontier, pitting soldiers against not only each other but also Native American tribes, outlaws, and even British forces.

Harry Norman Turtledove is an American novelist, who has produced works in several genres including alternate history, historical fiction, fantasy and science fiction. In 1979, Turtledove published his first two novels, Wereblood and Werenight, under the pseudonym "Eric G. Iverson." Turtledove later explained that his editor at Belmont Tower did not think people would believe the author's real name was "Turtledove" and came up with something more Nordic.
