<spoiler>I really liked the idea: a scientist who accidentally ends up in the fae world and now has to survive in a dangerous court. It sounded so cool. But then the plot twist happened… and everything kind of fell apart for me.
I didn’t see it coming, yeah, but not because it was well written but because it made zero sense. We’re in Callie’s head the whole time, and she keeps insisting she’s not an assassin, that she wasn’t sent to kill the prince. And then suddenly… she was? How would she never think about something that important? I literally had to stop reading and say out loud, “Wait, WHAT?”
The funniest part is that Mendax apparently knew the whole time. I thought he was kind of dumb, but turns out he was actually the smartest one in the room.
The writing wasn’t great, to be honest. Characters change personalities from one chapter to the next. One minute they hate each other and swear they could never have feelings, and the next they’re pouring their hearts out like it’s been years of emotional buildup. It’s a lot.
And Callie… she’s supposed to be a 29-year-old scientist but acts like a 19-year-old. The author never lets us forget how beautiful she is—like a Disney princess—and she even throws in a weird dig at another woman’s “saggy boobs,” which felt super unnecessary. Mendax is supposed to be this dark, ancient, inhuman being, but he talks like an angsty teenager and literally says stuff like “I’m the bad guy.” I was expecting a dark, intense love interest… and got that.
Still, I’m gonna read the second book. Not because I loved this one, but because I need to know how the author is going to deal with the mess she made. Morbid curiosity wins, I guess. </spoiler>
