House of Bone and Rain
Gabe and his four closest friends, Bimbo, Xavier, Tavo, and Paul, have stuck together since grade school in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The day they graduate high school, they get word that Bimbo's mother, María, has been shot to death. She worked the door of a San Juan nightclub for her brother, dealing drugs on the side.
The five have kept one rule since childhood: anyone who hurts one of them answers to all five. Bimbo wants to know who did it, and the group starts hunting her killers on their own.
The search leads to Papalote, a drug lord whose name empties a room on its own. Revenge starts costing the friends more than they expected. The storm brings a hunter of its own: a presence out of Puerto Rican folklore, chasing something through the wreckage too.
Gabino Iglesias narrates through Gabe, moving between a street-level crime novel and a folk horror tale without either fully taking over. The violence is graphic, and a parent's death sits at the center of it. It moves at a steady pace rather than fast, and the mood stays dark and heavy with the coming storm.
