Synopsis

After her father's death, Jane North-Robinson and her mother Ruth leave California for North Manor, Ruth's decaying childhood home in coastal Maine. Jane, a bookish Agatha Christie fan who copes with rage by literally eating paper, starts making friends in her new town but also draws a local bully's attention.

A locked "storage room" in the house turns out to be a preserved child's bedroom, and Jane learns it belonged not to an aunt, as she'd been told, but to a half-sister who died young in the manor's garden — decades of buried grief her mother never disclosed. As Jane investigates, unsettling occurrences escalate toward an ending that stays deliberately ambiguous about whether the haunting is real or a manifestation of Jane's own unraveling mind.
