Hideo Yamamoto
Homunculus (Omnibus) Vol. 3-4
This omnibus collects volumes 3 and 4 of Hideo Yamamoto's Homunculus, continuing the story of Susumu Nakoshi, a homeless former salaryman who agreed to an experimental trepanation procedure and has since been able to perceive people's "homunculi" — twisted physical manifestations of what lies beneath their outward appearance.
In this volume, Nakoshi keeps investigating why only some of the people around him appear monstrous while others look ordinary, a question tied to his own psyche and past. His search for an answer is complicated by an unsettling new symptom: his left arm has begun to look robotic.
Homunculus is written and illustrated by Hideo Yamamoto, creator of Ichi the Killer, and is known for its disturbing, body-horror-driven take on trauma and perception. The series inspired a 2021 live-action film released on Netflix.
A live-action film adaptation directed by Takashi Shimizu was released in 2021 and is available on Netflix. The film serves as a retelling of the manga but features a different ending and some character changes compared to the original source material.
The original manga series was serialized in Weekly Big Comic Spirits and collected into 15 individual volumes. These English omnibus editions collect those original chapters into larger, combined volumes to complete the full series.
