Synopsis

Hams al-Jufun ("Whisper of the Eyelids") is Mikhail Naimy's only poetry collection, first published in Beirut in 1945. It gathers verse he composed mostly between 1919 and 1923, together with three earlier poems from 1917 ("The Frozen River," "My Brother," and "Who Are You, O My Soul"). Breaking from the traditional two-hemistich structure of classical Arabic verse, the collection is regarded as a landmark of modern Arabic poetry — introspective, spiritually searching verse on life, death, and the unity of the soul, written in plain, direct language rather than ornate classical diction.
