Synopsis

When her mother dies, Elena Rincón — 43, married, a mother herself — begins a slow reckoning with her own life: her mother, her husband Enrique, her daughter, her brothers. Notebooks left behind surface old griefs, and along the way Elena discovers Enrique has been having an affair with his secretary. Wandering the city without destination, she confronts a solitude that turns out to be less an ending than a kind of liberation. Winner of Spain's Premio Nadal in 1990.

Juan José Millás (b. 1946, Valencia) is a Spanish novelist and journalist known for blending ordinary domestic life with surreal, uncanny observation — a hybrid short form he calls the "articuento". He studied philosophy at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, then worked for the Spanish postal savings bank and the airline Iberia before turning to writing and journalism full-time; since 1990 he has been a regular columnist for the newspaper El País.
