His Hideous Heart
His Hideous Heart: 13 of Edgar Allan Poe's Most Unsettling Tales Reimagined, edited by Dahlia Adler, pairs thirteen YA authors — including Kendare Blake, Rin Chupeco, Lamar Giles and Tessa Gratton — with thirteen of Poe's most famous stories and poems. Each writer retells a classic (Metzengerstein, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, The Fall of the House of Usher and more) through a contemporary lens, centering teenage narrators — often queer, of color, or otherwise marginalized — who face Poe-worthy horrors alongside the horror of a world that holds power over them. Poe's original texts are reprinted in a second section for comparison.
