Herbst in den Weiden is part of William Horwood's series of sequels to Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows, returning to Mole, Ratty, Toad and Badger and the familiar riverbank and Wild Wood setting for a new adventure as the seasons turn. Horwood's Willows sequels — including Wind in den Weiden, Frühling in den Weiden and Weihnachten in den Weiden in their German editions — extend Grahame's animal characters into further stories of friendship, home and the changing English countryside.

Patrick Benson, a Mother Goose Award-winning illustrator known for his detailed pen-and-ink work, provided the artwork that accompanies Horwood's text, continuing the illustrated-classic format of the earlier books in the series.
