Her Last Breath
Tess does not like enclosed spaces, which is most of the reason she agrees to go caving with Allie: her friend is the adventurous one, and Tess has decided it is time to stop being managed by the fear.
What she is not expecting, several hundred feet underground, is another person. The encounter leaves her jammed into a crawl space in the dark with no way to signal anyone and a very narrow set of options.
Tess comes out alive. Taylor Adams then runs the book on two tracks: the hours in the cave, and an interview room afterwards, where a detective is investigating a homicide connected to that day and would like Tess to walk him through it again. Her account of what happened underground is the only account there is, and the further the questioning goes the more of it has to be reconsidered.
A claustrophobic woman trapped underground during a caving trip, later questioned about a death connected to it.
Tess's adventurous best friend, who talks her into the caving expedition.
This is a standalone story and does not require knowledge of the author's previous works to follow the plot.
The narrative structure relies on a framing device where the protagonist recounts the events to a detective after the fact, which creates an element of uncertainty regarding the reliability of the information provided.
