Johanna Spyri
Johanna Spyri was a Swiss author best known for her beloved children's novel, Heidi. Her stories often explore themes of nature, family, and the simple joys of life.
Heidi
Heidi is a cheerful orphan girl sent to live with her reclusive grandfather in the Swiss Alps. While she brings joy to the mountain community with her sunny disposition, her life takes a turn when she's sent to the city. Heidi longs for her mountain home, her friends, and her grandfather, proving that true happiness lies in the simple things.
The original story was published in two parts between 1880 and 1881, but the character's journey continued in later works such as Heidi Grows Up, which were written by other authors after the copyright expired.
While the author destroyed her personal diaries and letters before her death, scholars believe the setting of the village was inspired by her childhood visits to Jenins, and certain characters like the doctor and the grandmother mirror her own father and mother.
The author included the subtitle A story for children and those who love children to signal that the narrative was intended to resonate with adults as much as it did with younger readers.
