Synopsis

Heartstopper, Volume 5 is the fifth instalment of Alice Oseman's bestselling LGBTQ+ graphic novel series. Nick and Charlie are deeply in love, but Nick's last year at Truham Grammar School means facing university applications — and the possibility that his future could take him away from Charlie. Charlie, still healing from the eating disorder that hospitalised him, must find the confidence to take the next step in their relationship while confronting his fear that the best months of his life might be ending. Alongside the central couple, the book follows their close friend group — Tao and Elle, Tara and Darcy, and Isaac — as the series continues its warm, honest look at teenage love, identity and mental health.

Frequently asked questions

  • How does this book connect to the author's other novels?

This series shares a fictional universe with other works by Alice Oseman, such as Solitaire, Radio Silence, and Loveless, where characters from one story may appear as side characters in another. While these books are interconnected, they function as distinct narratives that do not require reading in a specific order to follow the primary plot of Nick and Charlie.

  • Is there a specific order I should read the Heartstopper books in?

The graphic novel volumes should be read in numerical order to follow the chronological development of the central relationship. Additional novellas set within this universe, such as Nick and Charlie and This Winter, provide supplementary perspectives on the characters but are separate from the main graphic novel sequence.

  • What is the relationship between the books and the Netflix series?

The television adaptation is based on the graphic novel series and was written and executive produced by Alice Oseman to ensure consistency with the source material. While the show remains faithful to the core story, it includes expanded scenes and character developments that differ from the page-by-page progression of the books.
