Synopsis

Great Australian Volunteer Firies Stories gathers first-hand accounts from the volunteer firefighters who make up the backbone of rural and regional fire response across Australia. The stories range from the 1880s through to 2020, covering not only bushfires but also road accidents, plane crashes, cyclones, floods and animal rescues.

Compiled by Bill 'Swampy' Marsh, a fixture of the long-running Great Australian Stories series (which also covers droving, shearing, railway and Flying Doctor stories), the book lets volunteers speak in their own words about the risks they take and the toll — and reward — of the work. It reads as an oral-history collection: short, self-contained accounts rather than a single narrative throughline.
