Yes, cigarettes are bad, but they bring people together! This is how the story begins, people from different backgrounds smoking alone together, something bizarre happens, and they start an investigation as a group project, each has a talent, and unlike your usual group projects, everyone actually participates.

This reminded me of early 2000's movies, it has that vibe. It feels incomplete though, it's not enough, I was just getting into it when it ended! I wish M. L. Rio would expand it and make it a full book, If We Were Villains was one of my favorite books of 2024, and I want more of her brilliant mind!
