Synopsis

The Buried Candelabrum (Gömülü Şamdan) is Stefan Zweig's 1936 legend of the menorah looted from Solomon's Temple when Rome sacked Jerusalem. As the sacred seven-branched candelabrum passes from conqueror to conqueror, moving ever further from its rightful keepers, the Jewish community despairs of ever recovering it.

The story follows an old rabbi who has spent his life searching for the candelabrum, and Benjamin, the child chosen to witness his quest and one day tell what he saw. As the elders who began the search die one by one, Benjamin becomes the last living link to a hope that has outlasted entire generations — that the candelabrum's return will be the sign uniting a scattered people.

Written as Zweig watched the rise of Nazism from exile, the novella reads as a meditation on displacement, faith kept across centuries, and what a community holds onto when everything else is taken.
