Synopsis

Golpes de luz follows Julia, a journalist who leaves Madrid after her divorce and returns with her ten-year-old son, Sebas, to the Galician village she grew up in, moving back home to care for her ailing, strong-willed mother, Luz. Sebas is convinced his grandmother is the Norse god Thor in disguise, since she never lets go of her hammer — but behind Luz's eccentricities lies a family history Julia has spent years avoiding.

Told across the perspectives of Julia, Luz and young Sebas, the novel moves between the daily work of caregiving and a buried past: the unexplained disappearance of Julia's father more than thirty years earlier, and the shadow of drug trafficking that swept through rural Galicia in the 1990s. Piece by piece, the present-day return home becomes a reckoning with what the family never told her.

Galician author Ledicia Costas — better known for her prize-winning children's and YA fiction — balances tenderness with dark humor in this multigenerational family drama, pairing an affectionate, often funny domestic story with the harder history running underneath it.
