This story deals with the African-American experience in the early 20th century. it's an exploration of race, family, faith, and identity. It shows how complex and layered human relationships are, through generations of a family. Each character is facing their own inner conflict, all trying to be saved from their sins, turning to god, seeking forgiveness while navigating a life that is hard on their souls. I read this book just because I fell in love with James Baldwin's writing in Giovanni's Room, and the subject is so different and yet the genius and beautiful writing remain.
