Synopsis
A long-dormant volcano erupts, choking the land in ash and darkness — and freeing the Lord of the Locusts to spread ruin across the valley. With the wounded Lucius Downs trapped with villagers at Old Man's Cave, Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, Smiley Bone, Thorn, and Gran'ma Ben must cross the "ghost circles" — unstable, dangerous rifts between the waking world and other dimensions — to reach the abandoned royal city of Atheia.
Along the way, Fone Bone learns that his own accidental brush with a ghost circle has left him carrying a fragment of the Lord of the Locusts' soul, making him a target for the rat creature Briar's schemes. The darkest volume yet in Jeff Smith's Bone series, opening its final act with the weight of war bearing down on every character.
