Synopsis

Kira has been an orphan since the day her mother died, and her twisted leg marks her as a burden in a village where the weak are left exposed in the fields. A gift for weaving and dyeing saves her: the ruling Council of Guardians takes her to live in the Council Edifice, where she is set to repairing the elaborate robe worn by the Singer at the annual telling of the world's history.

Working alongside Thomas the Carver, who shapes the Singer's staff, Kira begins to notice how carefully her society limits what its people are permitted to know, create, or question. Her search for the one thread color she cannot yet make — a true blue — leads her toward secrets the Guardians would rather keep buried.

The second book of the Giver Quartet moves away from Jonas's community to a very different, harder world, examining art, disability, and the ways power sustains itself by controlling knowledge.
