Synopsis

Madeline Miller reimagines the myth of Pygmalion from the point of view of his creation. A sculptor, unwilling to share his life with a flawed human woman, carves the perfect wife from marble and prays until the goddess brings her to life. That woman is Galatea — and this is her story, not his.

Years into the marriage, Galatea's role is to play the obedient miracle: to lie still as stone until her husband's touch and words "wake" her, to be beautiful, grateful, and above all controlled. But she has a daughter now, and a will of her own that her husband cannot abide. When her growing independence frightens him, he has her confined, and Galatea begins to plan.

Barely eighty pages, Galatea turns a familiar fairy tale into a sharp, unsettling portrait of a woman treated as property — an examination of bodily autonomy, obsession, and the cost of taking back one's own life.
