From the Embers

Bree and Eason have never much cared for each other, though their families have been close for years. An explosion tears through Bree's house one night. It kills both of their spouses and leaves each of them the only parent their children have left.

Eason moves in with Bree afterward, and the two of them raise the kids together under one roof. Living with someone she has spent years quietly judging feels impossible at first. The shared grief wears down the old irritation anyway, and something warmer starts to take its place.

The financial strain that once fractured Eason's first marriage, the same thing that put Bree off him in the first place, has not disappeared. As their feelings for each other grow, those old tensions start to surface again, threatening the family they have pieced together out of tragedy.
